International Symposium
“Political Reform in Greece in Comparative Perspective”
Electra Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki, November 3-4, 2011

For well over a decade successive Greek governments, socialist and conservative alike, have sought to reform the Greek state. Now Greece is obliged by its international creditors to introduce reforms that have hitherto eluded even the most progressive of Greek politicians.

The Dukakis Center will convene practitioners and informed observers from Europe and the US to consider the prospects for reform in the current environment. All dimensions of political life will be considered, from institutions and practices to civic education and political discourse. The goal is to invite public reflection on the potential for reform in Greece and beyond.

Nikiforos Diamandouros, EU Ombudsman, and Kevin Featherstone, Director of the European Institute at the London School of Economics, will be the principal speakers. Other guests include Nikos Konstandaras, Kathimerini, Landon Thomas, NY Times, and Michael Dukakis (via teleconference), among many others.

The symposium will take place in Thessaloniki on November 3-4, 2011 at the Elektra Palace Hotel in downtown Thessaloniki. The event will commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the American College of Thessaloniki, the tertiary division of Anatolia (125 years, 1886-2011), and inaugurate formally the Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service (formerly the Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service). Working languages will be Greek and English, with simultaneous translation provided. The event is open to the public.
